The local government of
Muntinlupa will implement total ban on firecrackers, prohibiting the
manufacture, sale, and use of pyrotechnic devices this Christmas and New Year
season.
Muntinlupa City police chief
Senior Superintendent Nicolas Salvador said that the local Peace and Order
Council will put up random checkpoints and conduct monitoring along streets and
marketplaces to apprehend violators of City Ordinance No. 14-092.
The City Government passed local
Ordinance banning the display and distribution of firecrackers in Muntinlupa on
its effort to lower casualties and harmful effects of pyrotechnic devices to
health and environment.
Barangays, owner of malls or
similar establishments may sponsor “community fireworks display” in designated
area upon acquiring permit from Philippine National Police and Bureau of Fire
Protection.
During the ordinance’s implementation
last 2014, the City Health Office recorded significant decrease in fatalities
and casualties from 18 bodily injuries and one (1) death case in 2013 to only
six (6) cases of injuries in 2014.
Mayor Jaime Fresnedi discourages
locals to patronize illegal selling of fireworks display products and asks for
participation in the City Government’s crackdown campaign of such devices.
Violators
caught with pyrotechnic devices, firecrackers and similar explosives will be
charged with a minimum of P1,000 up to P5,000 fine or imprisonment of not more
than one (1) month to six (6) months.
Muntinlupa LGU will conduct a
motorcade and distribute torotot (trumpets) and candies on December 30 to raise
awareness in the implementation of the city ordinance and encourage everyone to
use alternative ways to celebrate the holidays.
